Renewable is the future

The rise of environmental awareness

What is a biomass boiler?

A biomass boiler is a heating system that utilizes biomass, or biological materials, as its fuel source. Biomass is a broad term that refers to any organic material derived from living, or recently living, plants and animals. This includes wood pellets, wood chips, logs, crop residues, and even animal waste.

Types of Biomass

The most commonly used biomass fuel for boilers is wood, in the form of logs, pellets or chips.

  • Wood pellets

These are the most common type of biomass boiler and are used in automatic biomass boilers that operate in a similar way to oil or gas boilers.

  • Wood chips

These are a good option for larger installations and tend to be used in automatically fed systems.

  • Logs

Typically used in smaller, manual systems, where logs are manually loaded into the boiler whenever heat is required.

In addition to wood, there are other types of biomass that can be used in a boiler system, including energy crops (like miscanthus or short rotation coppice), agricultural residues (like straw), food waste, and industrial waste.

Working Principle of Biomass Boiler

Biomass boilers work by burning biological material to heat water, which can then be used for both space heating and hot water. This heat is transferred to a liquid – often water or thermal oil – which circulates through the biomass boiler, heating every part. This hot liquid is then used to heat radiators or underfloor heating systems, and even to provide hot water for your home or commercial building.

Why Choose Biomass Boilers

Biomass boilers are chosen for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Renewable energy source

Biomass is a renewable energy source as it is essentially stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy. It is carbon neutral as the carbon dioxide released when energy is extracted from biomass is balanced by that absorbed by plants in their life cycle./p>

  • Cost effective

Biomass fuels tend to be cheaper than fossil fuels, making biomass boilers a cost-effective heating solution. In addition, some countries offer financial incentives for using biomass as a heating source.

  • Reduction in carbon emissions

By using biomass for energy, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions.

  • Waste management

Biomass boilers offer a solution to the problem of waste management, particularly where it can be utilized as an energy source.

  • Energy security

Biomass can contribute to a secure energy supply, as it is abundant and widely available, and can be locally sourced, reducing dependency on imported fuel sources.

Certainly, while biomass boilers do offer several advantages, there are also potential drawbacks that need to be considered:

  • Space requirements

Biomass boiler systems tend to be larger than conventional fossil fuel boilers, and also require more space for fuel storage and delivery. This could be a limiting factor in urban settings or properties with limited space.

  • Initial investment

The upfront cost of installing a biomass boiler can be quite high compared to traditional gas or oil boilers. This is because of the boiler's complexity, the need for a large storage bin, and the requirement for a flue that meets regulations for biofuel combustion.

  • Maintenance

Biomass boilers typically require more maintenance than other types of boilers. This includes regular cleaning of both the boiler and flue, along with occasional ash removal. Without this maintenance, the efficiency of the boiler could decrease, leading to higher running costs.

  • Fuel availability and price fluctuation

While biomass is broadly available, the cost and availability of specific types of biomass fuel can vary depending on the location and time of year. If you rely on a specific type of biomass fuel, this could potentially lead to issues if that fuel becomes scarce or more expensive.

  • Manual Labor

Depending on the type of biomass boiler, you might need to manually load the fuel into the boiler, which can be a physically demanding task. Additionally, the ash from the burnt biomass needs to be removed and disposed of.

  • Carbon neutral debate

While biomass is considered carbon neutral because it only releases as much carbon as the plants absorbed while growing, there is some debate about this. Critics argue that this doesn't take into account the full lifecycle of the fuel, such as the emissions produced during cultivation, processing, and transportation.

  • Impact on air quality

If you're thinking about switching to a biomass boiler, we hope this has answered some of your questions and helped you decide whether a biomass boiler is best for you.
